Is My Stress About What I Have or What I Am Missing?

A bit of stress is to be expected in any of our lives as a normal and natural part of life. An unexpected traffic jam, an uncooperative toddler, a nagging colleague. Stress specialists are well trained in the mental, emotional and physical consequences of feeling ‘out of control’ for extended periods of time, when stress ceases to be a punctual ‘fight or flight’ response and turns into chronic weariness of a ‘lifestyle’ turned into ‘life-chasing around’.
But sometimes, part of the ‘stress’ we feel is the focus on what is ‘too much’ in our lives. We have too many social functions to attend to, or have too many meetings to go to, we have to take care of three small children during the day, everyday, or we have too many tasks on the list.
Yet for many of my clients, the real issue is not the toddlers, the parties, the boss or the errands. The real issue is that we need a balance to put what is ‘demanding’ in our lives into perspective,. The businessman may really like the new challenges at work but misses family time. The busy mom loves her kids, but might just need a break from time to time, the student may be passionate about his field, but need to put the books down from time to time for a walk in nature.
Try this thought out for size: if I truly feel grateful for what I have, the challenges around me, the opportunities to grow as a person, the support I have and can find, could part of my stress and frustration be seen as an indication of the balance I am looking for?
Instead of focusing on the topic that is seen as producing a sense of ‘too much’, ask yourself, what could I do to balance my life and obtain fulfillment by incorporating small routines, by asking for help, by saying ‘no’ now and again? By shifting the focus, we shift from ‘victim’ feeling to empowering what we know is right and good in our lives. Every small effort counts!
