Hair Extensions – Healthy Tips

Keeping hair extensions clean and well maintained add to the life of the extension. They look better and feel better while allowing you to go about your day with a natural looking and feeling head of hair. Here are some great tips for proper maintenance and care.
Hair extensions should be washed, conditioned, and moisturized every two to three days to keep them looking clean, healthy, and shiny. Only use a high quality shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to wash your tangle free hair in a downward motion – this is a very important point to take note of. When cleansing synthetic hair it is best to use a wet brush to gradually wet hair before washing. Dry hair tends to tangle easily when soaked.
Oil naturally produced by your scalp has no way of reaching extensions. It is important to add moisturizer with each washing to keep extensions strong. A lack of moisture results in brittle, damaged, extensions with split ends. There are moisturizers on the market specifically made for hair extensions.
Hair extensions should be kept tangle free. Begin at the end of the extension and gently comb or brush from the bottom up. Comb in a downward direction to prevent adding more tangles and damaging the strands. Use a soft bristle brush or wide tooth comb. Extensions should be brushed two to three times daily, and before getting wet. (i.e. showers, swimming) Always brush or comb extensions before sleeping on them.
Take precautions when styling your extensions. Heat, when applied often and frequently lessens the life span of your extensions, this is very important to be cognizant of. Human hair extensions can retain more heat than synthetic ones, and this is also a reason they are damaged easily. Try using rollers instead of a curling iron. Use blow dryers and curling irons set on low temperatures. Never sleep with wet hair. Let it air dry, blot it dry, or wrap it before sleeping.
Be careful when applying chemical treatments to hair. Chemicals used in dyes, highlights, bleaches, and perms can be very harmful to extensions. Extensions come in a variety of shades, highlights, and textures so it’s best to opt for pre-treated extensions. If you must color or perm your extensions leave the job to your stylist.
There are many hair care products on the market today that cater to hair extensions. Always use products that are alcohol-free. (alcohol dries hair) Use a leave in conditioner after each washing and before all styling. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse hair after each styling to wash away and prevent product build up. Product build up can cause tangling, leaving you to deal with a messy do.
